New Law Hampers Photographers

Section 76 of the the Counter Terrorism Act became law today in the UK. The new law was ushered in with a protest at the home of the Metropolitan Police, New Scotland Yard by around 150 photographers who staged a mass photo-shoot What’s the fuss about? Well the new section states (1) A person commits an offence who— (a) elicits or attempts to elicit information about an individual who is or has been— (i) a member of Her Majesty’s forces, (ii) a member of any of the intelligence services, or (iii) a constable, which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, or (b) publishes or communicates any such information. ...

Forgive me if this seems a little self-pitying, but photographers in the UK seem to be fighting a losing battle both with members of the public and with the police (or more accurately community support officers, security guards and police officers who are ignorant of the law on photography in a public place). More and more reports are being written about photographers who take pictures in public places having to undergo stop and search and confiscation of their cameras and equipment if deemed to be acting suspiciously. ...
