Earn Money Through Travel Photography

You can earn money through travel photography without leaving your home town, did you know that? I am going to write a fuller article on another site that I write for, and will post the link here, but for a taster of what I will cover, check out this synopsis. No Need To Leave Home A year before last I went to Rome. It is an absolutely breathtaking city, and if you’re someone like me who loves history, then Rome has bags of it and then some. ...

New Law Hampers Photographers

Section 76 of the the Counter Terrorism Act became law today in the UK. The new law was ushered in with a protest at the home of the Metropolitan Police, New Scotland Yard by around 150 photographers who staged a mass photo-shoot What’s the fuss about? Well the new section states (1) A person commits an offence who— (a) elicits or attempts to elicit information about an individual who is or has been— (i) a member of Her Majesty’s forces, (ii) a member of any of the intelligence services, or (iii) a constable, which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, or (b) publishes or communicates any such information. ...

Classic Photos in Lego

Photographer/artist Mike Stimpson has recreated some of the most iconic pictures from photography masters such as Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. The pictures can be seen on the BBC website. I was quite amused at the images, and the photographers take on re-creating such classic images using a child’s toy. It just goes to show that with a little imagination one can create using any material or medium. Fluidity in ideas leads to the creation of great pieces of art. ...

The Law and the Photographer

Forgive me if this seems a little self-pitying, but photographers in the UK seem to be fighting a losing battle both with members of the public and with the police (or more accurately community support officers, security guards and police officers who are ignorant of the law on photography in a public place). More and more reports are being written about photographers who take pictures in public places having to undergo stop and search and confiscation of their cameras and equipment if deemed to be acting suspiciously. ...

Documentary Photography

I recently curated a photography show about a UK gospel choir who this year celebrate 13 years in the music industry. Using the images taken over the years, we were able to build a visual history of the life of the group from 1994 to 2007. Although most of the images were taken, not as ‘documentary’, but as a combination of promotional, live event and portrait photographs, along with my co-curator, we found enough in the images that could tell the story of the group over the time. ...

Completed and Feeling Fine

I have now finished my MA Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths, just awaiting the final marks. The year was rounded off with a very successful exhibition No Right Turn, held at Underground Village in Shoreditch. This group exhibition featuring 25 finishing students was staged over 4 days and included a symposium on the last day with artists talking about their work. I was delighted with my first exhibition, and although not 100% happy with the final work, was very happy with the responses to the work by visitors to the show. ...

Conversations With a Yard Man ( Pt I)

A “Yard man” is a Jamaican. Another term frequently used to describe Jamaicans is “Yardie”, but that has recently been appropriated, and most people think of a Yardie as a gang member so I will use the former to refer to the man with whom I stood today in conversation with for around half hour. He started the conversation with me as he saw the camera I was holding in my hands while waiting to pay for some goods in my local corner shop. ...
