2019 Open Air Theatre Summer Schedule
What will you be watching in the park this year?
The summer schedule for 2019 is out! People inspired by one of London’s premier theatre spaces will be as thrilled as I am because we can now start planning our annual outings to one of the most unique places there is to watch live theatre.
So this year I have my eye on two shows. A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Evita. I’ll be happy to tell you why those two in a minute. They are also showing Our Town (16 May - 08 June) and Hansel and Gretel 14 June - 22 June.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Showing 28 June - 27 July
This is just the bar!, imagine the enchantment of the amphitheatre, once the designers have finished transforming it into the magical, delightful world of Puck, Titania and Oberon for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I’ve seen quite a few productions of this play, at this venue and others, and I will never forget the experience of watching it in Regents Park for the first time, on a midsummers night. Only one production has disappointed, I wasn’t sorry when it was rained off if I’m honest. It has been a couple of years since it was seared into my brain, I think the memory has mostly been eradicated, and I feel able to cope with seeing it again.
Evita
Showing 02 August - 21 September
As a fan of musical theatre, well theatre in most forms, and having seen the work that this company does, the calibre of players, directors and stage/set design, I am very excited to see what they will do with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita.
If this is anything like the production of Jesus Christ Superstar, it will be an absolute triumph.
Jesus Christ Superstar Bonus
Showing 04 July - 24 August 2019 Barbican London
So, I watched the Open Air Theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar twice. It was so successful they brought it back the next summer. This show is amazing! I promise you, there was a hush and the air stopped moving at the point where Jesus uttered his ‘it is finished!’ I PROMISE you I’m not lying.
It’s great to see the show’s in the evening, but every now and then, I would recommend that you go see an afternoon show there. It’s brilliant because everyone is at work and I genuinely believe most visitors to London don’t actually know about this gem. I’m not sure how long that will last mind, and I hope I’m not jinxing myself).
Anyway, as if this season’s offerings were not enough, their production of Jesus Christ Superstar is being staged at the Barbican, also in London. Do yourself a favour and go book your tickets now. I know I will be, very soon.
