Everyone is Black

I am currently listening to Afua Hirsch - Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging via Audible. The author recounts her impressions of landing in Ghana on her very first trip there at the age of 15. She describes seeing the ground staff, airport security personnel, everyone with whom she encountered in that first couple of moments and realising that everyone is Black. This sentiment, this realisation is one with which I am familiar, as it is precisely the same feeling I had when I visited the home of my parents Jamaica for the first time. ...

Nappily Ever After

Violet (Sanaa Lathan) is a confident, high achieving black advertising executive. Successful in her job and in her relationship, her chief concern is to be perfect to snag Clint (Ricky Whittle) her ideal man. Expecting Clint to propose on her birthday, she surreptitiously (through her assistant) helps him plan the perfect surprise birthday party, to be attended by friends and family. ...

Stranger Danger

Arriving at work in the morning and seeing someone sitting at the desk next to the one at which I usually sit, trepidation begins to creep over me. Porgy and Bess July 2014 Open Air Theatre

I usually start checking the schedule around February each year to see what’s on for the season. Imagine my delight when I saw Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess on the billing. ...

Inspiration comes in many forms

I like this image supposedly from a Mercedes Benz advert. I don’t remember the ad, I saw this image first on a HD wallpaper website. It’s a marvellous visual feast of colour exploding on the right hand side and simplicity and control on the left. It appeals because it is two sides that every one has (obviously) and we should remember that regardless of what anyone else says, we are all humans and by nature complex beings. ...

Ugly Review

The story in this book centres on the Constance Briscoe’s recollections of her childhood and the abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother throughout her young life up until the time that she left to attend university. At its heart it is a harrowing tale of physical and psychological abuse, isolation and trauma. Briscoe is the child of Jamaican parents. Born into a family with 10 siblings, she is singled out for flagrant mistreatment in the form of beatings, starvation and abandonment. ...
